About Us

General Info:
Paint the DoG was started by Christina Knickerbocker in 2003 in Durango Colorado.  Christina is still the president of PtD, with the good fortune to hire expert artists, technicians, and crew.  It’s been a great ride with many exciting projects and interesting people attached.

Paint The DoG produces a variety of projects, from historical documentaries, to commercials, to training films and web and print promotionals.  PtD also strives to create quality projects at or under budget.  These qualities have helped Paint The DoG grow and succeed.  As our PtD president says,

“We won’t do a job unless we’re passionate about it, but you’d be surprised what we can get passionate about.”

CK w Camera India1   What does “Paint the DoG” mean?
We get this question a lot.  Here’s the story:
It all started when Christina  Knickerbocker quit her job as a financial advisor to go back to college and pursue  filmmaking.  Her Art History professor went to great  pains to separate what he called “High Art” and “low art” into different  categories.  When he downplayed some intricate,  gorgeous examples of “low art craft” from another culture, Christina took up the debate with her friends in the  class:

“So what’s the real difference?”

One friend patiently explained, “It’s simple!  Ok, if you have something really inspired, like the Sistine Chapel, or a painting of Jesus on the cross, or a sculpture of a Greek god, then that’s High Art.  But if you have a painting of a dog, or a sculpture of a flower, then that’s low art.  Get it?”
Christina didn’t get it.  She replied, “But if you're inspired to paint the dog, you should paint the dog!”

“Paint the dog” became a slogan among Christina's friends, meaning “Do what you’re inspired to do.”  When she started a production company, someone suggested she use the phrase in the company name.  It fits.  Here at PtD, we get to do what we’re inspired to do, and help others to do the same.
